Making healthcare costs easier to share and navigate

Making healthcare costs easier to share and navigate

Receiving treatment does not always mean a patient can afford the bill that follows. Others may need surgery or another essential procedure but cannot raise the full amount upfront. For families already dealing with the stress of a health concern, the gap between receiving care and being able to pay for it can become another difficult problem.

BetterHealth was conceived to help close that gap. The platform contributes a portion of an eligible patient's bill and helps bring in the wider community to fund the remaining amount. It also gives supporters a way to understand the need, commit to helping, and follow the funding journey through clear progress and updates while limiting the patient information shared publicly.

The Challenge

Turning a private financial burden into a coordinated, trustworthy funding process

Healthcare funding can be deeply personal. A patient may have already received treatment but be unable to settle the outstanding bill, or may need surgery that remains out of reach without additional support. Friends and family may help, but coordinating contributions across a wider group can be difficult when there is no clear place to understand the need, see what has been raised, or follow what happens next.

A fundraising page alone does not solve the whole problem. Patients need a way to submit their case, the platform needs a consistent process for reviewing and presenting it, and supporters need enough information to make an informed decision without exposing unnecessary personal or medical details. Everyone also needs clarity about the funding target, contributions received, remaining amount and updates along the way.

BetterHealth needed a system that could connect case intake, funding commitments, payment and progress tracking in a way that treated patient dignity and trust as essential parts of the experience.

Why ZeroComplex

Build trust into the process, not just the fundraising page

The challenge called for more than a donation button. The platform needed to guide a case from submission through review and publication, show how contributions move the case towards its funding goal, and keep supporters informed as progress is made.

ZeroComplex approached BetterHealth as a coordinated funding workflow. The experience needed to be straightforward for patients and supporters while giving the platform a structured way to manage cases, contributions and updates. Privacy also had to be considered at the point of design: public case information should be limited to what is necessary to explain the funding need, with sensitive details handled carefully and access restricted where appropriate.

Solution

A shared process for patients, supporters and funding progress

ZeroComplex is building BetterHealth around the journey from a healthcare funding need to a tracked community contribution.

Patient case submission. Patients or authorised representatives can submit the information needed for a case to be reviewed. The process is designed to collect only the information necessary for the platform's purpose.

Structured case presentation. Eligible cases can be presented with a clear funding target and a concise explanation of the need. The public-facing information should avoid unnecessary identifiers and sensitive medical details, with consent and appropriate review built into the publication process.

Shared funding model. BetterHealth's model is designed to contribute a defined portion of an eligible bill---such as 40%---while inviting the community to help fund the remainder. The exact allocation, eligibility rules and funding conditions should be made clear for each case.

Contribution tracking. Supporters can commit to helping and follow progress towards the target, including the amount raised and the remaining funding need, subject to the platform's actual payment and commitment flows.

Updates throughout the journey. Case updates help supporters understand whether the funding process is progressing and what milestones have been reached. Clear communication helps reduce uncertainty for people contributing to a sensitive and consequential need.

Together, these elements are intended to make healthcare fundraising more structured and transparent than a collection of disconnected appeals and private messages.

Result

A clearer path from healthcare need to community support

BetterHealth is designed to make it easier to present eligible healthcare funding needs, coordinate contributions and keep supporters informed. Patients can have a more structured way to seek help, while contributors can see the funding target and progress rather than relying on scattered updates.

The platform's value depends on clear eligibility criteria, responsible case review, secure handling of personal information, reliable payment reconciliation and timely updates. Its impact should be measured through evidence such as the proportion of cases fully funded, time to reach funding targets, contribution completion rates and the share of cases receiving timely updates.

Conclusion

Make support easier to give and easier to follow

When people are already dealing with a health concern, navigating the cost of care should not add unnecessary confusion. BetterHealth aims to make community support more coordinated by giving patients a way to present a funding need and giving supporters a clearer view of how their help contributes.

For ZeroComplex, the project reflects a broader principle: software can help organise not only business operations, but also the complicated processes through which people help one another. The system must make the journey clearer while treating privacy, dignity and trust as non-negotiable design considerations.

“People shouldn’t have to choose between getting the care they need and managing the cost. BetterHealth makes it easier to get help and for communities to show up.”
